Experience

In mid-1998 I took a long-term contract assignment at Nortel’s Harlow laboratories that was developing an element manager application in Java as part of Nortel’s so-called ‘Succession’ program.

The network element was an innovative component of the Succession architecture that integrated with the existing Nortel DMS switch as a peripheral unit, but effectively used an ATM network to extend the switching fabric’s capacity.  In this way a single Succession node could effectively provide switching that spanned a continent.

Achievements

Initially a member of the Systems Engineering team writing UML style use-cases an sequence diagrams.

Later undertook the implementation of the use-cases associated with the downloading of software the components of the managed element.  This entailed the development of a client GUI application using Java Swing, and the server components that controlled and monitored the software download process and provided the client with progress indications that were displayed to the user.  Used initially Java RMI and later replaced with CORBA interfaces between client and server components.
